Before we begin with a consideration of the major topic of this article, I want to begin with a checklist of items someone beginning an online business needs to consider.

  • Establish a legal framework.  This will vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.  You may wish to hire an attorney, but that is often not necessary at this stage.  However a brief check with your accountant or financial advisor may be in order.
  • Consider liability issues for your business.  Here the advice of an attorney is very useful.  A one or two hour consultation is inexpensive and can avoid many problems for your business down the road.
  • Make sure your business has sufficient resources to get through the beginning phase when you will be operating with little to no income.  You may find it useful to get a business loan.  If you have insufficient collateral but you have a good credit rating, you may want to look at www.prosper.com for a new approach to financing your business for the first few years.
  • You definitely need a business plan.  There are companies and financial advisors that will create a business plan for you.  This is an area, however, where you can trade some time for money by doing it yourself.  It's going to take some studying, though.  You can start by reading articles about business plans.  Reading some ads can be useful, as well.  In order to sell their product, the vendors will give away some free information by telling you what they will do for you.  You can also purchase business plan templates.  I would think of those simply as models; don't merely plug in the variables.
  • Decide whether your business has enough money to outsource the creation of your site.  If not, commit to the purchase of good site-building software.  If you know HTML, there are good free and inexpensive site-builders available.  The easiest approach is to purchase the best.  Many online businesses use these:  xSite Pro (the least expensive of those I'll mention), Microsoft's Front Page and Adobe's Dreamweaver (ranked the best by many).
That brings us to the major focus of this page:  how your online business will be reliant upon search engines.  Most people are going to find your business for the first time by being referred by a search engine.

search tools you'll ever use, and you can

Most businesseses will be listed on search engines in two ways:  an ad which the business will purchase to be listed at the top (or along the right-hand column) of the search results for certain terms (keywords); of by the businesses's natural page rank (PR).  The latter (PR) is the best way for your business to be found, because you don't have to pay to have those customers find you!

Most business will buy ads by using pay-per-click search engines, especially in the beginning.

In order to achieve a good PR, your business's site must be optimized for search engines, and this is something that is vital for you to understand no matter who is actually building your site.  Even if you outsource the initial construction of your business site, probably later changes and additions and minor tweaking will be done in-house.

One good way to check out some differences between paid search results and those that are the result of natural PR, which is the result of efficient search engine optimization is this:  Sometime when you're searching, today,  click on links of both types (paid and unpaid).  It there a difference in the relevance of the sites?  If the search engine has done its job well, there shouldn't be much difference.  The search company should make sure that the paid inclusions are very relevant to the search terms.

Often, in fact, the paid search listing will be very well constructed, because they are confident enough in their results to be willing to pay for their listings.  Of course, that will not always be the case, but I'll let you do your own experimentation and come to your own conclusions.

In order to achieve good search engine optimization (SEO), you need to buy some good SEO software and advice. Don't worry, these investments will pay for themselves within a month by bringing customers and leads to your site for free!  I've listed some great tools in the right column of this page.

Understanding how search engines work and how people search are important parts of your eventual success in the online business world.  I've provided some links to sites that will let you learn about various search engines, searching techniques, etc.--again, in the right column.

(Another way people
choose sites is by going
to a directory. Here's a
great tool to get your
site listed in a directory.
I had been paying $60
per month to have others
to do this for me. This
software makes it a snap!)

The days of putting up a business site and sitting back and counting the customers are over--if they ever existed! Success with an online business requires the same investment of time and money (although perhaps a little less money) as operating a business in your city's downtown.  But it can be a lot of fun, and the financial rewards can be great if you do it right from the beginning.

Here's to your success!
